Giant Food Stores’ long-planned “e-commerce hub” in Lancaster will soon see the light of day.
Dubbed Giant Direct, the new online delivery center will open Feb. 12 at the former Giant supermarket at 235 N. Reservoir St., Lancaster. That store closed in May 2017, a decision that drew protests from angry Lancaster residents.
The 38,000 square-foot hub expects to have 150 workers filling online grocery orders. Customers can order online via the Giant Food Storeswebsite, Peapod’s website, or the Peapod app, and drive up to the pick-up location, where the groceries are delivered to their vehicles.
The new hub will also will feature a walk-up vestibule with easy-order tablets for customers who prefer an alternative to ordering online.
“We are excited to make Lancaster the home of our newest innovation with the launch of our new GIANT DIRECT, Powered by Peapod e-commerce hub,” Nicholas Bertram, president of GIANT Food Stores, said in a press release. “Not only is the e-commerce hub a completely new concept for us and a first of its kind in our area, it’s the product of a fruitful collaboration with Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace and local residents to give the Lancaster community the shopping experience they want and need.”
The e-commerce hub will be Giant’s fifth in Pennsylvania.
