Wood isn’t the only natural product that makes for beautiful, sustainable floors. While cork and bamboo have been sustainable, plant-based flooring options for years, new materials, such as hemp, are coming onto the scene.
In fact, Christina Hall, star of HGTV’s “Flip or Flop” and “Christina on the Coast,” recently partnered with Fibonacci LLC (dba HempWood) to champion the company’s HempWood Natural Flooring. Hemp is a fast-growing, renewable resource, with all hemp used in the manufacturing of HempWood sourced from within 100 miles of the Kentucky factory where the flooring is made. The product’s sustainability is part of the reason why Hall stands behind it, even installing the product in her Nashville home. “After hearing their story and checking out their products, I knew I wanted to be a part of the next biggest thing in hardwood flooring and interior design,” Hall told FCW. In addition to its sustainability story, Hall said she takes pride in knowing that HempWood is American-made — and she appreciates that it’s durable enough to keep up with her family and their busy lifestyle. As part of her partnership with HempWood, Hall will be creating home designs and sharing those ideas on her Instagram, where her 1.7 million followers can see how HempWood can be used in a space. “I hope to inspire unique, sustainable home designs,” Hall said.
It wasn’t until recently that hemp, a cannabis plant, could be grown legally in the U.S. The 2018 amendment to the Farm Bill legalized the growing of hemp, and that same year, HempWood CEO Greg Wilson founded the company. In 2019, HempWood production began in its Murray, Ky. facility, where in addition to flooring, the company makes lumber, frames, furniture, building materials and wood turning blanks.
