Hyundai has unveiled the newly updated 2025 IONIQ 5 lineup, featuring enhanced models including the rugged new IONIQ 5 XRT. The updated range will also be manufactured at Hyundai’s new Metaplant America facility in Georgia.

The new models, Hyundai claims, introduce increased battery capacities, improved driving range, and a variety of new features aimed at enhancing convenience, performance, and safety.

The 2025 IONIQ 5 will now come with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting access to over 17,000 Tesla Superchargers and doubling the DC fast-charging network available to IONIQ 5 drivers.

The new IONIQ 5 models will be eligible for a $3,750 U.S. tax credit and potentially additional federal incentives. Hyundai continues to innovate with its EVs, incorporating customer feedback into features like improved infotainment systems, advanced safety technologies, and enhanced interior ergonomics.

The IONIQ 5 XRT features a rugged design with elevated ground clearance, unique bumpers, and 18-inch all-terrain wheels, making it suitable for adventurous driving. This model stands out with its distinctive design and off-road capabilities, bridging the gap between the standard model and the high-performance IONIQ 5 N.

Earlier this year, Hyundai announced how it was investing nearly $1 billion in the autonomous vehicle startup Motional, securing a majority stake and buying out its joint venture partner, Aptiv. Hyundai’s $475 million direct investment was part of a broader deal, which included purchasing 11% of Aptiv’s equity in Motional for $448 million. This investment will support Motional’s development of a driverless robotaxi service using Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles, with plans to launch this year.

Aptiv, which has been scaling back its involvement due to high costs and extended timelines for robotaxi commercialization, will reduce its stake in Motional from 50% to 15%. Hyundai’s increased stake marks a significant shift in control, positioning it as the dominant partner.

This move comes as the robotaxi sector faces uncertainty, with Waymo leading in commercialization and other players like GM’s Cruise and Tesla navigating their own challenges.
